WINNIPEG — Tyreik McAllister put together among the rarest of performances in the CFL, scoring three different ways to lead the Calgary Stampeders to a 52-30 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday night.
McAllister became the first player in CFL history to record a rushing touchdown, a receiving touchdown and a kick return touchdown all in a single game. The 28-year-old running back opened the scoring with a 17-yard run, hauled in a 56-yard pass and returned a missed field goal 118 yards for a major.
All three touchdowns came in the first half.
The Stampeders snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 3-4, while the Blue Bombers had their three-game win streak halted and slipped to 4-3.
The Stampeders led 8-0 after the first quarter, 25-17 at halftime and 39-27 heading into the final quarter.
Due to a glitch with the CFL stats service — which was being worked on post-game — final numbers from the game were not immediately available for reporters.
Heading into the game, McAllister had zero touchdowns and only three rushes for 17 yards, two catches for 17 yards and seven kickoff returns totalling 408 yards.
According to the CFL, McAllister is just the third player ever to score in three distinct ways in the same game. He’s the first since Earl Winfield did it on Sept. 5, 1988, and joins James Jefferson (Oct. 4, 1987) as the only other players to accomplish the feat.
His triple-threat performance proved too much for the Bombers to overcome as Calgary didn’t trail for a second on the road in a hot and humid Princess Auto Stadium.
Vernon Adams Jr. continued his historic run. The Stampeders quarterback entered the game having thrown 17 touchdowns compared to zero interceptions through seven games, tying Ricky Ray and Darian Durant for the most touchdowns without an interception to start a season.
Adams is now at 20 passing touchdowns and has tied the CFL record alongside Stampeders head coach Dave Dickenson for most passing touchdowns without throwing a pick. The 33-year-old has thrown 269 passes without an interception dating back to last season.
Adams finished 18-of-27 passing for 319 yards, along with three touchdowns.
Calgary’s offence totalled 344 net yards, with Jalen Philpot, Tevin Jones and Dedrick Mills each adding a touchdown.
The Bombers offence had 357 net offensive yards, but had far too many costly turnovers. Dru Brown went 24-for-40 passing, throwing for one touchdown and four interceptions. Receiver Nic Demski scored one touchdown and running back Brady Oliveira added a pair of rushing scores.
Philpot was the game’s leading receiver, hauling in four catches for 128 yards, including a 69-yard touchdown.
Ontaria Wilson led the Blue Bombers receivers with 95 yards on seven catches. Oliveira hit the century mark for the second time this season, rushing 11 times for 118 yards to go with the pair of touchdowns.
Calgary opened the scoring just minutes into the game when McAllister capped a three-play, 59-yard drive with a 17-yard rushing touchdown. A rouge shortly after made it 8-0.
Winnipeg threatened late in the frame, but Calgary defensive back Ben Labrosse intercepted Brown in the end zone. The Stampeders failed to capitalize and punted, allowing returner Trey Vaval to rip off a 41-yard gain to Calgary’s 27.
Two plays later, Brown hit Demski on a 37-yard screen pass for a 37-yard touchdown. The highlight-reel score cut the Stampeders lead to 8-7 just seconds into the second quarter.
Calgary answered back immediately when Adams found a wide-open McAllister over the middle for a 56-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 15-7.
McAllister struck again midway through the second quarter, returning a missed 58-yard field goal attempt by Sergio Castillo 118 yards for his third touchdown of the half, pushing Calgary’s lead to 22-7.
Oliveira capped a 10-play, 75-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown run up the middle, cutting the deficit to 22-14 late in the half.
Calgary kicker Jude McAtamney hit a 52-yard field goal to make it 25-14, but Castillo answered with a 50-yarder to trim the Stampeders’ lead to 25-17 at halftime.
Calgary wasted little time adding to their lead in the second half, with Adams connecting with Philpot for a 69-yard touchdown and a 32-17 lead.
Castillo answered back on the next drive with a 36-yard field goal to cut Calgary’s lead to 32-20.
The Stampeders found the end zone on their third series of the second half, with Adams throwing his third touchdown, this time to Jones on a seven-yard grab to put the visitors ahead 39-20.
The Bombers refused to go away quietly. Oliveira scored his second rushing touchdown of the game on a 45-yard scamper to make it a 39-27 game.
On the next series, Adams was sacked by Winnipeg defensive end Nuer Gatkuoth and fumbled, recovered by Bombers defensive tackle Michael Fletcher, giving Winnipeg the ball on Calgary’s 26. The home side settled for a Castillo 34-yard field goal that cut the lead to 39-30.
A turnover on downs at the Calgary 49 put Winnipeg in prime position to get back into the game. But Brown was intercepted by Labrosse on the next play, resulting in McAtamney kicking a 24-yard field goal to extend the lead to 42-30.
Brown was intercepted for a third time on his next pass, this time from Calgary defensive back Zy Alexander. The series ended with a missed 42-yard field goal attempt.
McAtamney made good on a 24-yard field goal late in the fourth to make it 45-30. Mills rounded out the scoring with his rushing major with fewer than two minutes remaining.
