Canadians tracker: Conners surges in second round, joins Taylor at 2-under for Open Championship

There are two Canadians in the field this week at the 154th Open Championship, the final men’s golf major of the season.

Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont. and Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C. are each looking for their first major championship, and it was Conners who jumped up the leaderboard during his early round Friday at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England.

After finishing his opening round 1-over, Conners bogeyed his starting hole Friday and sat 1-over on the round through 11. But the 34-year-old caught fire on the back-nine, making birdie on five of his final seven holes to post a round of 3-under for the day.

That got him to 2-under for the week and put him in a tie for 22nd at the conclusion of his round. Conners was six shots back of leader Lucas Herbert at 8-under, who shot a 28 on the front-nine at Birkdale to match an Open Championship record.

Taylor, who was 2-under himself in his opening round a day ago, was scheduled to tee off at 3:26 p.m. local time, 10:36 a.m. ET.

He has yet to make a cut in his three-tournament Open Championship career while Conners has played the weekend five straight years, highlighted by a T10 finish last year at Royal Portrush.
