The Toronto Blue Jays have activated right-handed pitcher Paul Sewald ahead of Friday night’s series opener against the New York Yankees.
The Blue Jays acquired Sewald off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
Sewald served as the Diamondbacks closer for much of the season and earned 24 saves with the team. However, he was demoted from the closer role on July 28.
Sewald has a 6.23 ERA in 45 appearances in 2026. He posted a 24.55 ERA in his final six outings with the Diamondbacks before he was designated for assignment on Aug. 10.
In a corresponding move, the Blue Jays optioned right-handed pitcher Lazaro Estrada to the Triple-A Buffalo.
Estrada has made eight appearances with the Blue Jays in 2026, posting a 5.54 ERA over 13 innings. He earned his first career save on Aug. 8 when he pitched a scoreless 11th inning against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Estrada gave up two runs in the ninth inning of Thursday’s 7-0 loss to the Boston Red Sox.
The Blue Jays are fourth in the AL East with a 59-64 record. They sit two games back of the Detroit Tigers for the final American League wild card spot.
