Toronto Blue Jays righty Max Scherzer threw five innings of no-hit ball in Triple-A with the Buffalo Bisons against the Rochester Red Wings on Wednesday.
The veteran and future Hall of Famer struck out seven on 56 pitches (40 strikes).
Scherzer, 41, has a 10.23 earned-run average in six starts this season at the major-league level for the Blue Jays this season. He hasn’t appeared in a game since June 10, when he allowed five runs over 3.1 innings in a loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.
Scherzer was placed on the injured list a day later with back spasms and right thumb soreness. He also missed significant time earlier in the year when he went down with a right forearm tendinitis and left ankle inflammation.
A two-time World Series champion and three-time Cy Young winner, Scherzer made 17 regular-season starts in his first season in Toronto in 2025, but was very strong in the postseason, helping the Blue Jays advance to Game 7 of the World Series by making three starts with a 3.77 ERA.
MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson notes that Scherzer will likely need at least one more rehab start before he is ready to play in the majors, and he could receive some interest in the trade market as the Aug. 3 deadline approaches given his postseason pedigree.
The Blue Jays enter Wednesday’s action at 46-55, six games out of the final wild-card slot in the American League. Rumours around the league increasingly point towards the Blue Jays operating as sellers at this year’s deadline amidst a lost season.
