The Toronto Blue Jays have designated right-hander Simeon Woods Richardson for assignment after he allowed six earned runs in one inning Thursday night against the Kansas City Royals.
Righty CJ Van Eyk was brought up by the Jays Friday in a corresponding move. He will be active for the series-opener against the Seattle Mariners.
The 25-year-old Woods Richardson entered Thursday’s game in the sixth inning with the Jays trailing 4-0. He proceeded to allow five hits and two walks, including a two-run home run Vinnie Pasquantino that made the score 10-0.
The Blue Jays would go on to lose 13-2 to fall three and a half games back of the final American League wild-card spot.
Woods Richardson has appeared in eight games for the Jays since they acquired him from the Minnesota Twins in early June. He has a 3.93 ERA in his time with Toronto with 14 strikeouts and 14 hits allowed in 18.1 innings.
Woods Richardson’s season ERA stands at 6.68 after he struggled in 20 appearances with the Twins.
Van Eyk, 27, has a 4.76 ERA in three appearances this season with the Jays. He owns a 3.79 mark in 21 outings so far this season with Triple-A Buffalo.
Ace Dylan Cease will take the mound for the Jays Friday night against the Mariners, going up against Emerson Hancock.
