Todd Benzinger, a World Series winner with his hometown Cincinnati Reds, has died at the age of 63, the team announced on Thursday.
Benzinger was the first baseman on the 1990 squad that defeated the Oakland Athletics in a four-game sweep.
“Todd will be remembered with great affection and gratitude for his place in one of the most memorable chapters in Reds history,” the team said in a statement. “Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, former teammates and all who knew and loved him.”
A native of Cincinnati suburb Dayton, KY, Benzinger appeared in 924 games across nine big league seasons with the Boston Red Sox, Reds, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants. He batted .257 in 2,856 career at-bats with 733 hits, 66 home runs, 376 runs batted in and an OPS of .687.
He contributed five hits during the Reds’ World Series run in 1990.
Benzinger retired after the 1995 season.
