Paul Goldschmidt isn’t ready to call it a career just yet.
After the New York Yankees were eliminated from the playoffs on Wednesday night, the veteran first baseman said he hoped to play a 17th season.
“I’d like to continue playing, so we’ll see if that opportunity happens,” the 39-year-old Goldschmidt told reporters. “I had a lot of fun playing here...and I enjoyed competing and trying to impact a team and help us win. I was able to do that, somewhat, but not ultimately get us, with the group of guys here, the win. So my mindset really hasn’t changed, so hopefully, I’ll have the chance to do that again.”
A native of Wilmington, DE, Goldschmidt appeared in four games in the postseason, walking twice in eight at-bats. During the regular season, Goldschmidt batted .250 in 105 games with 87 hits, 18 home runs, 52 runs batted in and an OPS of .765. It was Goldschmidt’s second season in the Bronx.
Originally taken in the eighth round of the 2009 MLB Amateur Draft out of Texas State, Goldschmidt spent the first eight years of his career with the Arizona Diamondbacks before six years with the St. Louis Cardinals with whom he won National League Most Valuable Player in 2022.
A seven-time All-Star, four-time Gold Glover and five-time Silver Slugger, Goldschmidt is a career .286 hitter with 2,277 hits, 390 home runs, 1,284 RBI and an .877 OPS in 2,179 games.
