Verstappen takes first pole for sprint race at Singapore Grand Prix with impressive lap

Published:

Max Verstappen has put his Red Bull on pole position for Saturday's sprint race at the Singapore Grand Prix with minutes to spare.

The Dutchman's pole was his first under the lights at the Marina Bay circuit. He finished 0.120 seconds ahead of Mercedes' George Russell.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was on provisional pole twice, before being edged out by Verstappen and Russell to finish third.

Oscar Piastri beat his McLaren teammate Lando Norris to fourth, with Norris behind.

Verstappen was sat in the garage for a large part of the final session in sprint qualifying and said after on the team radio that the car felt "a lot nicer."

However, Verstappen is under investigation by the stewards for passing Lewis Hamilton through a yellow flag zone in SQ1 and is due to visit the stewards in the next hour or so.

Hamilton crossed the line in sixth, half a second off the leader's pace.

There was a delay to the start of SQ2 after there was an issue with the FIA timing screens, but it was resolved after 16 minutes.

The FIA revealed after sprint qualifying that there was a "human error in race control unrelated to the timing issue."

"During the first period of Sprint Qualifying there was a human error in Race Control unrelated to the timing issue also encountered in SQ1," the FIA said in a statement.

"This issue in question meant Overtake Mode was not available after the red flag period during SQ1. When it became apparent that Overtake Mode was not active after the restart, it was then activated for a period of 27 seconds before being deactivated again.

"The FIA acknowledges that this unfortunate human error had an impact on the performance of certain cars based on the timing of their run and their position around the lap. The second and third periods of Sprint Qualifying were not affected."

Title leader Kimi Antonelli is running the upgraded Mercedes package and finished down in seventh.

His teammate Russell, who topped the sole practice session, is on a different specification and has reverted back to the old package for the weekend.

"It's always close here in Singapore," Verstappen said afterwards. "And also your lap itself, you're pushing as hard as you think is possible, close to the walls in places.

"Once we bolted on the soft tyres, it felt like the car was coming alive a little bit more, but I did not expect this. Of course, [I'm] very happy to be first.

"I think the last few races we have been a lot stronger, but this track still highlights a few little weaknesses in the car, but we manage to drive with them as well as possible."

Liam Lawson finished in eighth for Racing Bulls, with Red Bull's Isack Hadjar in ninth. Alpine's Pierre Gasly rounded out the top 10.

Saturday's sprint race, which will be the final one of the season, will take place at 10 a.m. BST / 5 a.m. ET.
