Arizona State University men’s hockey head coach Greg Powers was placed on administrative leave Wednesday.
The program has been under investigation since St. Louis Blues prospect Matthew Mayich collapsed on Aug. 20 due to heat stroke during an outdoor preseason workout. Mayich remains on life support with little chance at recovery, per his family’s lawyer Rob Carey.
The Athletic reported on Monday that seven Arizona State players submitted a 26-page letter to ASU president Michael Crow disputing the original findings from the school’s review of Mayich’s collapse and that the 21-year-old did not receive water or adequate medical care.
“Our focus continues to be on Matthew and his family, and on our student-athletes to make sure they have the support they need during this time and as the season begins,” ASU Athletics Director Graham Rossini said in a statement. “We have continued to collect as much information as possible. After thorough and careful deliberation, I believe this is the best move to provide stability for the hockey program.”
Assistant coach Mike Corbett will lead the team as the Sun Devils open the season this weekend against Lindenwood.
