Arizona State has a new coach.
Colorado Avalanche assistant Dave Hakstol is leaving the organization to become the head coach of the Arizona State Sun Devils hockey team, the school announced on Thursday.
Hakstol joined the Avalanche in July of 2025 and has been with the team since.
Hakstol, 58, has had two stints as an NHL head coach with the Philadelphia Flyers (2015-2019) and Seattle Kraken (2021-2024).
Hakstol has previous NCAA experience as well, managing North Dakota from 2004 to 2015, during which he led the Fighting Hawks to six Frozen Four appearances and one national title.
Arizona State head coach Greg Powers was placed on administrative leave on Sept. 30 and was not with the team for its opening weekend at Lindenwood after 21-year-old St. Louis Blues draft pick Matthew Mayich collapsed during an Aug. 20 workout.
Seven Arizona State players sent a letter to university president Michael Crow asking for an independent review and for the coaching staff involved with the outdoor workout to be placed on administrative leave until it was completed.
