Gibbs becomes NFL’s highest-paid running back with three-year extension

The NFL has a new highest-paid running back in Jahmyr Gibbs.

The Detroit Lions star has agreed to a three-year, $75.75 million deal with $51.5 million guaranteed, his agent announced on Instagram.

The guaranteed money is the most-ever for a running back.

Gibbs, 24, is heading into his fourth season out of Alabama. Originally taken with the 12th overall selection of the 2023 NFL Draft, the Dalton, GA native has been named to the Pro Bowl in all three of his NFL seasons. In 17 games in 2025, Gibbs rushed for 1,223 yards on 243 carries with 13 touchdowns. He also caught 77 passes for 616 yards and another five TDs.

For his career, Gibbs has rushed for 3,580 yards on 675 carries with 39 touchdowns in 49 games. He also has 1,449 yards on 181 receptions with 10 TDs.

The Lions open up their preseason schedule next Thursday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Their regular season kicks off on Sept. 13 at home to the New Orleans Saints.
