JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Trevor Lawrence has not been his best in September. Statistically, anyway.
The Jacksonville Jaguars’ quarterback has won only 33% of games, completed only 60% of his passes, and posted a Total QBR of 47 in September -- all the worst marks of any month of his career.
But on Sunday, he had one of the best days of his career in a 34-10 rout of the Cleveland Browns at EverBank Stadium. He looked a lot like the quarterback who got on a roll in the second half of 2025, when he led the Jaguars to the playoffs and earned MVP consideration. That version of Lawrence will need to continue if the Jaguars are going to successfully manage a five-game stretch that includes four 2025 playoff teams.
“When he is playing to the best of his ability like we know he can, the offense starts clicking and he makes some big plays downfield with some great throws, and we feed off of that,” running back Bhayshul Tuten said. “We love him.”
The sixth-year QB was on a roll against the Browns. He completed 78.3% of his passes for 245 yards and four touchdowns with a 93.4 Total QBR. It was just the third time in his career that he has thrown four or more TD passes. On passes of 10-plus air yards, Lawrence completed 10 of 11 attempts for 179 yards and a career-high three touchdowns, per NFL Next Gen Stats.
Spreading the ball worked really well for the offense. Lawrence completed passes to nine players, and each TD pass went to a different player.
“I thought he spread the ball around, trusted the guys that were in to make plays,” head coach Liam Coen said. “I thought we protected him really well, thought we mixed it up from the run game and some different things to keep them off-balance to allow Trevor to continue to do what he does. He did some really good stuff off-schedule again today, especially the touchdown to Jakobi [Meyers], I thought was a phenomenal throw and play in the back of the end zone.
“So was definitely pleased with the way that Trevor ran the offense today.”
It was the sixth time in the past nine regular-season games (all victories) that the Jaguars have scored 30-plus points. Lawrence has 23 touchdown passes -- more than any other quarterback -- and only five interceptions in those nine games.
But the Jaguars will need him to continue that pace for the next five weeks if they are going to establish themselves as legitimate AFC contenders. That starts with Sunday’s game at the Denver Broncos, followed by a home game against the New England Patriots, a road game versus the Cincinnati Bengals and then back-to-back games in London against the Philadelphia Eagles and Houston Texans.
“I feel really comfortable, really confident in what we’re doing,” Lawrence said. “I think last year at this time, I knew what we were doing, but it was still -- you’re still getting used to the game plan and the moving parts of the offense, which was a lot, which is a big change for me. I think there was that dynamic of still trying to get completely comfortable in it.
“It was awesome to get a win in Week 1 but excited now. We have a big challenge next week and got to turn the page and go put together another great game plan.”
Lawrence’s best game of 2025 came against the Broncos in Denver. He withstood a strong pass rush -- five sacks and 14 QB hits -- and threw for 279 yards and three touchdowns with no turnovers in a 34-20 victory. The Jaguars didn’t start that game fast but pulled away with two third-quarter touchdowns. Lawrence would like the Jaguars to repeat what they did against the Browns, scoring two first-quarter touchdowns and leading 24-0 at the half.
“You want to start the game fast and play well in that first possession so you can settle in as soon as possible and not give the ball back to the other team,” he said. “I think that’s always something you want to do, but I think it comes down to preparation. Also, every game is different. You don’t know exactly what the defense is going to do first series, and so there’s a lot of moving parts.
“For us to start fast today like we did, that’s the goal moving forward, obviously, and going to continue to build on that.”
Which could make this Lawrence’s best September.
