Ravens QB Jackson out; Huntley to start SNF vs. Falcons

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has been ruled out of Sunday night's game at the Atlanta Falcons with a left ankle injury, coach Jesse Minter announced Friday.

Jackson will miss his first game of the season after not practicing all week. The Ravens will start backup quarterback Tyler Huntley, who was 2-0 as fill-in starter last season.

"We have a ton of confidence in [Huntley] to play really well," Minter said. "I think everyone on the team is excited to see that."

Jackson injured his ankle during Sunday's 24-18 win over the Tennessee Titans. He didn't play in the second half and left M&T Bank Stadium on Sunday night wearing a protective boot on his left foot.

Asked about Jackson's timeline Friday, Minter said, "To Lamar's credit, this dude is working his tail off to get back. Don't know the specifics of next week, but I know he'll be doing everything in his power to get back."

With Jackson as their starting quarterback, the Ravens are 79-32 (.712), averaging 28.4 points per game. Without Jackson since the start of the 2019 season, Baltimore is 6-11 (.353) with its average points per game dropping to 17.6.

But five of the Ravens' six wins without Jackson have come from Huntley.

"We definitely got all the confidence in him," wide receiver Rashod Bateman said after learning Huntley would start. "He's won games when we've needed to. He's got Lamar's back, and he's going to carry us along the way."

The biggest drop-off from Jackson to Huntley is explosive plays. In four games this season, Jackson has thrown nine passes of 25 yards or longer, which ranks fifth in the NFL. In Huntley's two starts last season, he totaled one completion of 25 yards or longer.

"They're obviously different players, and Lamar is one of one," Minter said. "But it's also the Ravens' offense and what we do to build around the playmakers that we have, the offensive line that we have, the running game that we have and the weapons that we have. [Huntley] has done a great job this week, and we have operated at a high level."

Baltimore also ruled out outside linebacker Trey Hendrickson, who will miss his second straight game after having finger surgery. With Jackson and Hendrickson both out, the Ravens will be missing two of their three highest-paid players in terms of average per year.

The Ravens are looking to improve to 4-1 for the first time since 2021.
