St. Louis Blues prospect Matthew Mayich is hospitalized after an off-ice training incident in Arizona last week, the team confirmed on Wednesday.

The 170th overall pick of the 2024 NHL Draft out of the Ontario Hockey League’s Ottawa 67’s spent last season at Clarkson University. The 21-year-old defenceman transferred to Arizona State in the spring.

“The entire Blues organization is keeping Matthew Mayich close to our hearts as we pray for his comfort and recovery while he continues to undergo medical treatment in Arizona,” Blues president Doug Armstrong said in a statement. “His agent has kept us informed about Matthew’s medical status over the last week and we extend our deepest support to his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.”

The OHL also released a statement on Wednesday.

“Our thoughts are with Matthew, his parents John and Christina and the entire Mayich family,” commissioner Bryan Crawford said. “Matthew spent four seasons in our league and earned the respect of everyone he played with and against. The entire Ontario Hockey League is thinking of him and pulling for him, and we are keeping his family close in our thoughts.”

Earlier in the day, the vice-president of media relations for ASU confirmed to The Athletic’s Katie Strang and Jeremy Rutherford that the school was investigating the specifics of the incident.

“A student-athlete who collapsed during an outdoor exercise Thursday morning remains hospitalized,” Chris Fiscus said. “The student-athlete, a member of the ASU hockey team, is not being named by the university because of privacy interests. The university is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the workout.”

Fiscus did not disclose whether or not the workout was sanctioned by the team.

The Tempe, Ariz. fire department confirmed that crews were sent to Sun Angel Stadium last Thursday morning after receiving a report of a “heat-related illness.”

Mayich, a native of Stoney Creek, Ont., has yet to sign an entry-level contract with the Blues.
