Montreal Canadiens forward Alex Newhook left Thursday’s game against the Dallas Stars with a lower-body injury.

The team announced that he was being evaluated and would not return.

The 24-year-old sustained the injury early in the second period after he was taken down by Stars defenceman Ilya Lyubushkin while racing for the puck and slid feet-first into the end boards.

Lyubushkin was assessed a minor penalty on the play.

Newhook remained down and needed help to get off the ice and into the locker room.

He entered tonight’s contest with six goals and six assists in 16 games.

The St. John’s, Newfoundland native is in his third season with the Canadiens and has totalled 36 goals and 36 assists in 153 games with the franchise.
