WINNIPEG — Kyle Connor scored his fifth goal of the season with one minute left in regulation to lift the Winnipeg Jets to a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday.
Mark Scheifele sent a pass from near the boards across to Connor charging the net and he fired a shot that beat Avs goalie Mackenzie Blackwood.
Scheifele registered his first two points of the season, also picking up an assist on new linemate Cole Perfetti’s goal. Defenceman Dylan Samberg contributed a pair of assists for Winnipeg (3-0-1).
Stuart Skinner made 32 saves for a Winnipeg side that extended its season-opening point streak to four games.
Jaden Schwartz and Fedor Svechkov each had a goal and an assist for the Avalanche (2-1-0). Blackwood stopped 16 shots.
Schwartz got the visitors on the board at 2:51 of the second period with a shot from the slot that beat Skinner, but Connor tipped in a Neal Pionk point shot 70 seconds later to tie it up.
A Samberg shot went in off Perfetti’s skate at 18:16 of the middle frame to give Winnipeg a 2-1 lead.
Svechkov tied it at 12:35 of the third when Schwartz sent a puck that bounced off the boards across to him in front of the net.
Takeaways
Jets: Veteran defenceman Josh Morrissey grabbed his right hand after hitting the glass while trying to check a player into the boards late in the first period. He came out for one shift in the second, but left the ice and the team ruled him out with an upper-body injury ... The Jets’ power play was at 50 per cent heading into the match (4-for-8), but they didn’t get any shots on goal in two man advantages.
Avalanche: After scoring 14 goals in their first two games of the season, the reigning Presidents’ Trophy winners were held in check by a hot Skinner. The new Jets netminder had Martin Necas’s number early in the game, stopping three good chances, including a one-timer during a first-period power play where Colorado had five shots.
