Flames F Zary, D Pachal among three to clear waivers

Calgary Flames forward Connor Zary and defenceman Brayden Pachal both cleared waivers on Tuesday.

New York Rangers defenceman Matthew Robertson also cleared after joining the Flames players in being waived Monday. The Columbus Blue Jackets placed forward Mikael Pyyhtiä on waivers Tuesday, while the Tampa Bay Lightning waived centre Jansen Harkins.

Zary and Pachal can now be assigned to the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers.

Selected 24th overall by the Flames in 2020, Zary is in his fourth season with the organization and is coming off a 2025-26 season in which he scored 12 goals and 13 assists over 74 games. He has one assist over two games this season.

In 193 career games with Flames, the 25-year-old native of Saskatoon has 39 goals and 48 assists.

Zary is in the second season of a three-year, $11.33 million contract, featuring an average annual value of $3.775 million.

Pachal, 27, has yet to play for the Flames this season. He tallied one goal and six assists over 39 games with Calgary last season.

The Estevan, Sask., native was acquired from the Vegas Golden Knights during the 2023-24 season.

Over 177 career games with the Golden Knights and Flames, Pachal has six goals and 22 assists.

Pachal, who played a handful of games with Vegas in 2022-23 when they won the Stanley Cup, will be a free agent this summer when his two-year, $2.38 million contract comes to an end.

Calgary has struggled considerably so far this season, losing all three games while being outscored 16-3, including two 6-1 losses to the Seattle Kraken.

The 25-year-old Robertson has not played this season for New York, but had six goals and 12 assists over 72 games with the team last year, his rookie season in the NHL.

The Edmonton native was selected by the Rangers in the second round of the 2019 NHL Draft.
