The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed defenceman Christopher Tanev on injured reserve with an upper-body injury.

In a corresponding move, the team has recalled fellow rearguard Dakota Mermis from the American Hockey League’s Toronto Marlies.

The move is retroactive to Tuesday.

Tanev, 35, incurred the injury during the team’s 5-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday evening. He left late in the second period and did not return for the third.

He had appeared in all seven of the team’s games this season, his second with the Leafs.

A native of East York, Ont., Tanev is in his 16th NHL campaign. He’s appeared in 874 games for the Leafs, Dallas Stars, Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks. For his career, he has 173 goals and 209 assists.

The Leafs (3-3-1) return to action on Friday night with a visit to the Buffalo Sabres (3-4-0).
