Leafs’ Rifai to be placed on IR with lower-body injury, out week-to-week

Published:

Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Marshall Rifai is set for a stay on injured reserve with a lower-body injury, TSN’s Mark Masters reports.

The 6-foot-2, 211-pound blueliner is listed as week-to-week.

Rifai, 28, left the Toronto’s morning skate early on Thursday with the injury before the team’s game against the New York Rangers.

“He’s dealing with something,” said Leafs head coach Jim Hiller after the session. “So, we’re gonna have to wait and see on that.”

Nick Blankenburg drew back into the lineup against New York in Rifai’s absence, but was unable to finish the game after taking a hard hit along the boards from Will Cuylle.

Hiller did not offer an update on his status after the game.

Rifai, a native of Beaconsfield, Que., was originally recalled from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies on Oct. 12 after the team placed defenceman Chris Tanev on injured reserve.

He skated 19:14 minutes of ice time in Toronto’s 6-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday, scoring his first career NHL goal in the third period.

It was Rifai’s second appearance for the Leafs in the 2026-27 campaign after he made his season debut on Oct. 13 in a 5-4 loss against the Utah Mammoth.

Rifai has appeared in five games for Toronto over the past three seasons after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent out of Harvard in 2022.

In 212 career games in the AHL, Rifai has scored nine goals and 53 points. He also added two goals and four assists across 24 games during the Marlies’ Calder Cup triumph this past spring.

The Maple Leafs improved to 6-4-2 with a 5-4 win over the Rangers on Tuesday as they get set for a four-game road trip out west beginning on Saturday.
