Maple Leafs place D Tanev on IR, Tavares rejoins team

Published:

The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed defenceman Chris Tanev on injured reserve, retroactive to October 10, due to an upper-body injury.

As a result, the veteran will miss at least the next three games.

The team also called up defenceman Marshall Rifai from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies.

Forward John Tavares also rejoined the team after missing time to be with his wife for the birth of their fourth child.

Tanve sustained the injury in Saturday’s game against the Colorado Avalanche. Tanev skated in five shifts in the first period, registering a minus-1 rating in 3:29 of ice time. He was not on the bench for the beginning of the second period, and was ruled out by the team shortly thereafter.

He has one assist in six games this season after being limited to 11 games last season due to a concussion, spine and groin injuries.

Blueliner Oliver Ekman-Larsson also missed practice on Monday for maintenance.

Forward Miles Wood also joined the team for practice. He was acquired from the Columbus Blue Jackets as part of the package that included Kirill Marchenko.
