Red Wings’ Horcoff shuts down Edvinsson trade rumours: ‘Not something I’m entertaining’

Detroit Red Wings interim general manager Shawn Horcoff said Wednesday he has “zero interest” in trading Simon Edvinsson as the restricted free agent remains unsigned more than two weeks into the season.

“Not something I’m entertaining,” Horcoff said of moving the defenceman, per Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press. “We want to sign him.”

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reported last week that the Boston Bruins are among the at least 10 teams that have inquired on Edvinsson’s availability on the trade market. Horcoff said Wednesday he remains open-minded on contract options and remains in regular contact with Edvinsson’s camp.

Edvinsson moved to back to Sweden in late September after spending training camp with the Red Wings, though TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston reported Tuesday he has since returned to North America to continue his training.

The two sides have until Dec. 1 to reach a deal before Edvinsson becomes ineligible to play in the NHL this season.

Finding a deal with Edvinsson was part of the tasks left to Horcoff as he was promoted in the wake Steve Yzerman’s decision to move into an advisor role this summer. Horcoff also inherited Dylan Larkin’s trade request, a situation that continues to hang over the team after he was stripped of his captaincy prior to camp.

Horcoff said Wednesday it remains “status quo” on Larkin.

The 23-year-old Edvinsson scored nine goals with 25 points in 72 regular-season games in 2025-26.

The sixth-overall pick in 2021 by Detroit, Edvinsson made his NHL debut on March 18, 2023 against the Colorado Avalanche.

He is coming off his three-year, entry-level contract.

Internationally, he helped Sweden win bronze medals at the U18s, World Juniors and World Championship.

In 175 career NHL games, the Onsala, Sweden has scored 19 goals and 60 points.
