The Buffalo Sabres acquired defencemen Caleb Jones and Daniel Laatsch from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for defenceman Ryan Johnson on Monday afternoon.

Jones, 29, had been skating with the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins this season, recording three assists in four games.

A fourth-round pick (117th overall) by Edmonton in 2015, Jones has appeared in 255 career NHL games, scoring 14 goals with 56 points, split between the Oilers, Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Los Angeles Kings and Penguins.

He last appeared in the NHL last season with Pittsburgh, notching one assist in seven games.

Laatsch, 24, was a seventh-round pick (215th overall) by Pittsburgh in 2021. He split the 2025-26 season between the AHL and the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers.

Johnson played in four games with the AHL’s Rochester Americans before the trade but did not record a point.

Drafted 31st overall by Buffalo in 2019, the 25-year-old has skated in 47 career NHL games, recording seven assists.
