Sens D Chabot likely out a week or two as Sanderson set to return

Published:

Ottawa Senators captain Thomas Chabot is expected to miss a week or two with the upper-body injury that forced him out of Saturday’s loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, head coach Travis Green said Monday.

Green, who noted the timeline is not confirmed yet, gave the update as fellow blueliner Jake Sanderson gets set to return to the team’s lineup on Wednesday.

Sanderson, who took part in practice Monday and said he is “fired up” to dress, has missed the past eight games dealing with a lower-body injury.

He last played in the Senators’ opening game on Oct. 3 against the Maple Leafs, playing just 4:29 minutes before departing with the injury.

The 24-year-old scored 14 goals with 54 points in 67 games last season while averaging 24:50 of ice time.

Green said Chabot was dealing with his injury entering the Flyers game. He appeared to be favouring his right wrist area after a collision with Flyers’ forward Trevor Zegras in the first period.

The 29-year-old played 16 shifts and 12:03 of ice time before exiting. He was minus-1 and recorded one shot on goal in the loss.

In nine games entering Saturday’s contest, Chabot had one goal and three assists. Over his 578-game career with the Senators, the Sainte-Marie, Que. native has recorded 79 goals and 339 points.

The Senators are 6-3-0 to start the season and sit third in the Atlantic Division. Ottawa will host former captain Brady Tkachuk and the Florida Panthers on Wednesday.
