The Dallas Stars have signed defenceman Nils Lundkvist to a two-year, $3.5 million contract extension that carries a $1.75 million cap hit, the team announced on Friday.

Lundkvist, 25, recorded three goals and 11 points in 52 games this season while averaging 16:29 of ice time.

He helped the Stars to a 50-20-12 record this season to finish second in the Central Division and will face the Minnesota Wild in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The 6-foot-1, right-shot defenceman is wrapping up a one-year, $1.25 million contract and was set to be a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

Lundkvist was acquired by the Stars from the New York Rangers in September of 2022 in exchange for two draft picks.

Drafted 28th overall by the Rangers in 2018, Lundkvist has 12 goals and 55 points in 235 career games split between the Rangers and Stars.

The Pitea, Sweden native represented his country at the 2021 World Hockey Championships in a ninth-place finish. He also represented Sweden at the World Juniors twice, taking home a bronze medal in 2020.
