MONTREAL — Canada’s Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson reached the quarterfinals of the Montreal Elite beach volleyball pro tour event Friday with a 21-13, 21-18 win over Brazil’s Thamela Coradello and Victoria Lopes.

The Olympic silver medallists from Toronto improved to 3-0 to sit in first place in Pool A.

“We were very clear about our pre-game plans and our ability to adapt and communicate between us too,” Wilkerson said. “We trusted our defence and our side out, but really you just have to battle.

“And that’s our goal this entire weekend – to battle.”

Lea Monkhouse of Mississauga, Ont., and Marie-Alex Bélanger of Saint-Alphonse-Rodriguez, Que., dropped two matches to fall to 0-3.

In men’s play, Sam Schachter of Richmond Hill, Ont., and Jonny Pickett of Wiarton, Ont., dropped a 21-13, 23-21 decision to Brazil’s André Loyola Stein and Renato Lima.

The Canadian pair still advanced to the playoffs at 1-2.

Steve Abrams of Georgetown, Ont., and Cameron Chadwick of Barrie, Ont., were 0-3 after dropping a 21-23, 21-18, 15-12 decision to Americans Taylor Crabb and Andy Benesh.

Play continues through Sunday at Parc Jean-Drapeau.
