Derek Cornelius incurred a non-contact injury during Canada training on Thursday and was taken to hospital.
The injury was to the Marseille centre-back’s lower body.
“Canada Soccer Men’s National Team defender Derek Cornelius sustained a non-contact lower body injury during training today in Toronto,” Canada Soccer said in a statement. “Derek was transported to a local hospital, where he is receiving medical care and undergoing further assessment. Canada Soccer’s medical staff are focused on supporting Derek and his full recovery, and we will provide further updates as appropriate.”
A native of Ajax, Ont., the 28-year-old Cornelius has been capped 48 times by Canada and is a regular in Jesse Marsch’s squads. He appeared in four games for Canada at this past summer’s World Cup. His loan international goal came in a 2025 friendly against Wales.
In his third season at Marseille, Cornelius has made four appearances across all competitions in 2026-2027, including three in Ligue 1. He has previously suited up for the Vancouver Whitecaps and spent the second half of last season on loan at Rangers.
Canada takes on Chile at BMO Field on Saturday before a date with Peru at Montreal’s Stade Saputo on Oct. 3. They then travel to St. Paul to face off with the United States on Oct. 6.
