Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany collapsed while attending a reserve team training session, the club announced on Friday.
The former Belgium and Manchester City great has been hospitalized and is under observation.
“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority,” Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said in a statement. “We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery. Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs. His coaching team, in whom we have complete confidence, will take over his duties. All of us at FC Bayern wish Vinnie a speedy recovery.”
The club notes that Kompany’s staff will assume coaching duties in his absence.
Kompany, 40, had been dealing with an illness in recent weeks. He was unable to attend training, but managed to be in the dugout for the team’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal midweek in Champions League action.
“I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and, of course, I didn’t listen to my body,” Kompany said after the match.
A native of Uccle, Kompany is in his third season as Bayern boss, leading the team to Bundesliga titles in the previous two seasons. Bayern currently tops the table after six matches on 14 points, level on points with Borussia Dortmund, but ahead on a superior goal difference. The team is set to visit Freiburg on Sunday.
