Manchester United boss Michael Carrick was the latest Premier League manager to weigh in on the Manchester City situation on Friday.
The former Red Devils midfielder says Premier League titles awarded retroactively won’t make up for the feeling of not having won them in the moment. Carrick’s United finished second to City twice in the 2009 to 2018 period in which City was found guilty of financial irregularities on a majority of 115 charges and would be in line for two more league titles if they are stripped from City and re-awarded.
“In football, the strive to win, the emotion and the feeling about winning, a lot of it is in the moment,” Carrick said of the possibility. “You can’t take that back. It’s the moment you strive for. That’s essentially what we’re all in it for. That’s the feeling we all crave. The beauty of trying to win trophies is a little bit the journey towards it and then the finale. Does it go for you, does it go against you? Once that’s done, there’s no getting that back in any direction. I’m not getting blasé about it, but regardless of anything, in any sport in history, if later on you get the medal, it doesn’t bring the feeling of when you initially win or you don’t.”
While Carrick acknowledges his stake in the matter, all he wants now is a quick resolution. City has officially appealed the independent arbitrator’s findings.
“I’ve got my own questions about it,” Carrick said. “It’s affected me personally in different ways over a period of time, but as the case is going now, I don’t know where that stands and how it’s going to end up. So we’ll just have to wait and see. What I will say, the sooner it gets sorted, I think for everyone’s benefit, is essential.”
Carrick spent 12 seasons at Old Trafford as a player from 2006 to 2018. In his time with United, he won five Premier League titles, an FA Cup, three League Cups, a Europa League and Champions League.
Carrick’s United, currently 12th in the table on five points, return from the international break on Saturday with a visit from last-place Tottenham Hotspur, another of Carrick’s former clubs.
