MONTREAL — Former world No. 4 Jack Draper has received a main-draw wild card for the National Bank Open as the British star continues his comeback from an arm injury.
Tennis Canada announced Wednesday that Draper, Alexis Galarneau of Laval, Que., and Liam Draxl of Newmarket, Ont., will receive wild cards into the men’s singles main draw, which begins Sunday at IGA Stadium.
Draper, whose ranking has fallen to No. 147, has played just 13 matches this season while recovering from an arm injury that forced him to miss the year’s first three Grand Slam tournaments.
The 24-year-old was expected to play this week’s D.C. Open but withdrew before his opening match.
Galarneau and Draxl join fellow Canadians No. 2 seed Félix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal, Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., and Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo in the main draw.
Japan’s Kei Nishikori, Duncan Chan of Markham, Ont., Keegan Rice of Regina and Justin Boulais of Oakville, Ont., received wild cards into Saturday’s qualifying draw.
“We’re thrilled to announce the final wild card recipients for this year’s National Bank Open,” tournament director Valérie Tétreault said in a statement. “With these latest additions, our main draw now features five Canadians and two standout players in Gaël Monfils and Jack Draper, both of whom have the potential to make a deep run.
“With former finalist Kei Nishikori and three more Canadians in the qualifying draw, fans can look forward to memorable moments from day one.”
The wild-card announcement comes after world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic withdrew from the tournament last week despite initially appearing on the player list.
Tennis Canada also awarded men’s doubles wild cards to Auger-Aliassime and Diallo, Shapovalov and Galarneau, and Draxl and Calgary’s Cleeve Harper.
