Vince Staples has reportedly landed a role in the pilot of an upcoming Showtime comedy, The Wood, according to Variety.

The series is based on the 1999 film of the same name directed by Rick Famuyiwa. The original film follows three best friends recounting the adventures they had as teenagers growing up in Inglewood, California.

Famuyiwa will also executive produce the pilot. He reunites with Staples following the rapper’s role in Famuyiwa’s 2015 film Dope, which also starred fellow rappers A$AP Rocky and Tyga.

Alongside Staples, who stars as an aspiring photographer named Jamal, the main cast includes Xavier Mills, Karen Obilom, Melvin Gregg and Essence Renae.

Original stars Richard T. Jones and Tamala Jones will also reprise their roles as Slim and Tanya respectively in the show.

The show is described by Variety as an exploration of friendship and dating through the experiences of three young Black men, who are each faced with the challenges of balancing “fatherhood, ambition and loyalty to each other.” The pilot will be set in the present day, rather than returning to the previous ‘80s and ’90s setting from the original film.

Production and release dates for The Wood have not yet been revealed.
