Reese, Williams Finals MVP co-favourites entering pivotal Game 5

Published:

We are about to make WNBA history.

Entering Game 5 tied 2-2 the Golden State Valkyries and Atlanta Dream will make WNBA Finals history when the series moves back to Atlanta for Game 6.

Game 6 will make this the first final in league history to go beyond five games.

In 2025 the league adjusted the Finals to a best-of-seven games, but the Aces won in a sweep, so we never even got to a game 5.

Now, with the series tied at twos and a sixth game guaranteed, we have history.

With no prior WNBA trends to look back on, I’ll note that in the (m)NBA the winner of Game 5 in a 2-2 series has gone on to win the series 82 per cent of the time.

Entering Game 5, FanDuel has Golden State as about as small of a favourite as it gets.

Can we take a moment and thank the Chicago Sky for making this WNBA Finals happen?

As we enter Game 5 of this historic WNBA Finals, both main characters were drafted, and traded, by the Sky.

First it was Gabby Williams, and then it was Angel Reese. Two players that Chicago moved on from, now they have to sit and watch them ball in the Finals for other teams while they enter the winter without a first-round pick and one of the worst records in the league.

Both in their first season with their respective teams, it’s Reese and her Dream that enter Game 5 slight favourites to win the series, despite not having home court advantage.

The path for Gabby Williams hasn’t been as clear as Reese, but after some time in France and a few years of losing in Seattle, Williams has found herself right where she belongs.

In the mix.

In her first season with Golden State, the forward enters Game 5 of the WNBA Finals +125 to win Finals MVP.

The only player in the series with shorter odds than Williams is of course the Dreams’ Reese.

After winning Defensive Player of The Year, Reese enters Game 5 +100 to win Finals MVP, and for good reason.

In Atlanta’s two wins, Reese has scored a combined 51 points adding 28 rebounds and six assists.

In the two losses, Reese has been held to under 15 points in both games.

Rhyne Howard is the only other player in this series priced shorter than 30-1 to win Finals MVP.
