Toronto Argonauts quarterback Chad Kelly left Saturday’s game against the BC Lions after suffering a neck injury in the late stages of the first half.
Kelly attempted to escape the pocket and was hit up high by Lions linebacker Darnell Sankey after he had gone to the ground to give himself up. Sankey would be penalized on the play.
The Toronto quarterback was taken back to the locker room for evaluation, and was later ruled out for the remainder of the contest.
Kelly threw for 197 yards and two touchdowns with the Argos leading 17-6 before leaving. Nick Arbuckle took over at quarterback.
The 2023 CFL Most Outstanding Player missed the entirety of last season while recovering from surgery after fracturing his tibia and fibula in the 2024 Eastern Final against the Montreal Alouettes.
The Argos would go on to win the 111th Grey Cup over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers with Arbuckle at the helm in Kelly’s place.
Toronto has played to a 2-4 record with Kelly back under centre as the team’s starter.
