Canadian QB Elgersma to start preseason finale for Blue Bombers

Published:

Canadian quarterback Taylor Elgersma will start the preseason finale for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday, the team announced on Thursday.

Elgersma, 24, was drafted by the Blue Bombers with the 18th overall pick in the 2025 CFL Draft after a successful university career at Wilfrid Laurier in U Sports.

He made an appearance at the Senior Bowl in the United States in 2025, then signed a free-agent contract with the Green Bay Packers of the NFL ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.

As TSN’s Dave Naylor wrote earlier this month, it’s been a long path for Elgersma, a native of London, Ont., to make his way to Winnipeg.

Now the team gets a chance to see the 6-foot-5 pivot in action against the B.C. Lions on Friday.

Elgersma is likely to be battling for the No. 2 spot in Winnipeg, who still have three-time Grey Cup champion and two-time Most Outstanding Player Zach Collaros under centre entering the new year. But the sky is the limit for Elgersma, who has the physical tools that any coach would be excited to use.

Elgersma seeks to join Nathan Rourke and Tre Ford as Canadian quarterbacks in the CFL this season - Rourke is the defending MOP entering this season with the Lions, and Ford is battling for a spot in the Tiger-Cats’ depth chart.

The Blue Bombers player the Lions on Friday for their final preseason tune-up before their regular-season opener against the Calgary Stampeders on Friday, June 5 on TSN.
