Former CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player Lorenzo Mauldin is unretiring to join the BC Lions, TSN’s Farhan Lalji reports.
Mauldin, 33, had previously signed a one-day contract to retire with the Ottawa Redblacks in March after a stint with the USFL’s Louisville Kings.
“To the city of Ottawa, you’ve embraced my family and me from day one and we have loved you back with everything in us,” Mauldin said in a team release at the time. “I would say this is the end, but it’s just the beginning of something new and happy to step away and be handed off as an Ottawa Redblack! Thank you for four great years!”
He finished last season with the Calgary Stampeders after he was acquired from the Redblacks in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2026 CFL Draft.
Mauldin had 26 defensive tackles with two sacks in 15 games last season split between the Redblacks and Stampeders.
The 6-foot-4 defensive lineman has 163 defensive tackles and 36 sacks in 91 career games split between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Redblacks and Stampeders.
His best season came during the 2022 campaign where he registered 43 defensive tackles with 17 sacks and two forced fumbles, leading him to win Most Outstanding Defensive Player honours and was named a CFL all-star.
Mauldin was named to a second CFL all-star team in 2024 after registering 52 tackles and eight sacks two two forced fumbles.
The Lions sit last in the West Divisiion with a 1-5 record this season and take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in a Week 9 matchup on Thursday.
