Tiger-Cats rookie LB Veresuk carted off field after collision with teammate

Hamilton Tiger-Cats announce the death of their General Manager Ted Goveia after his battle with cancer.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats rookie linebacker Devin Veresuk was carted off the field with an apparent injury in the fourth quarter of their game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday.

TSN’s Matthew Scianitti reported after the game that Veresuk was being evaluated for an upper body/neck injury away from the stadium, but that the team could provide no further update.

Veresuk, the second overall pick in last year’s CFL Draft, ascended to a starting role on the Tiger-Cats’ defence midway through the season.

Veresuk wrapped up Bombers QB Chris Streveler for a sack in the fourth quarter, but was hit by his teammate on the play, and went down to the field immediately. As Veresuk departed the field on the cart, he gave the fans a thumbs-up.

The 23-year-old Windsor, Ont. native lay on the field for a few minutes, and both his teammates and opponents knelt on the field as a sign of respect while the training staff attended to the rookie.

Veresuk has been a revelation for Hamilton this season, registering 45 tackles, an interception, a forced fumble and a pair of defensive touchdowns. His sack on Streveler marked his second sack of the campaign.
