The Memorial Cup continues from Kelowna on Sunday as the top teams from around the Canadian Hockey League compete for junior hockey’s biggest prize.
The Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League champion Chicoutimi Saguenéens battle host Kelowna Rockets with both teams searching for their first win at the tournament.
Chicoutimi fell to the Western Hockey League champion Everett Silvertips 5-3 on Saturday night to open their tournament.
The Saguenéens had a 2-1 lead early in the second period thanks to goals from forward Christophe Berthelot and Nashville Predators prospect Alex Huang.
However, they went on to allow three straight goals in the second frame as Everett picked up their first ever win at the Memorial Cup.
Ottawa Senators goaltending prospect Lucas Beckman allowed four goals on 37 shots in the loss. The 6-foot-2 netminder joined the team in January after a trade with the Baie-Comeau Drakkar and went 13-1 with a 1.52 goals-against average and .940 save percentage in Chicoutimi.
He was stellar in the QMJHL playoffs, going 16-4 with a .918 save percentage and 1.98 GAA.
Huang was key for the Saguenéens’ push to get into the Memorial Cup tournament, finishing second among defencemen in QMJHL scoring with 11 goals and 70 points in 62 games. He added two goals and 19 points in the playoffs to help Chicoutimi win their first Gilles-Courteau Trophy since 1994.
The Saguenéens will be looking for more from QMJHL MVP Maxim Massé, who scored late against the Silvertips. Massé led the league in scoring this season with 102 points and his 51 goals tied him for the most in the QMJHL.
Massé, an Anaheim Ducks prospect, went on to lead Chicoutimi in scoring during the playoffs with six goals and 24 points in 20 games.
Chicoutimi will also hope to have more of an opportunity on the power play after not receiving a chance until the 18:55 mark of the third period. Masse scored on that man advantage to bring his team within a goal, but was too little too late.
Kelowna is looking to rebound as they lost their tournament opener to the Ontario Hockey League champion Kitchener Rangers 5-0 on Friday.
Chicago Blackhawks prospect Jack Pridham and veteran forward Dylan Edwards provided a goal and an assist each for the Rangers while defencemen Carson Campbell and Alexander Bilecki each provided two assists.
San Jose Sharks draft pick Christian Kirk picked up the shutout, stopping all 24 shots from the Rockets.
Kelowna netminder Harrison Boettiger allowed five goals on 39 shots in the loss. The 6-foot-2 goaltender had a 25-10-5 record during the WHL’s regular season with a .911 save percentage and 2.83 goals against average.
The Rockets will need production from star centre Tij Iginla, who led the team in scoring during the regular season with 41 goals and 90 points in 48 games and then added seven goals and 12 points in the playoffs.
They will also seek secondary scoring from Sharks prospect Carson Wetsch and Los Angeles Kings draft pick Vojtech Cihar.
Wetsch was a key acquisition prior to the start of the 2025-26 campaign from the Calgary Hitmen and finished second behind Iginla with 22 goals and 72 points. He is still looking to showcase his game in the postseason after only recording two goals and four points in eight games.
Cihar joined in the middle of the season after he helped his native Czechia claim silver at the 2026 World Juniors. He finished as the tournament’s MVP after scoring four goals and 12 points.
Upon joining the Rockets, the 6-foot winger was a point-per-game player in Kelowna, registering 12 goals and 31 points in 31 games. He added six goals and 13 points in nine playoff games before his team was eliminated in the second round.
The Memorial Cup continues on Monday when Kitchener battles Everett LIVE at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on TSN1/3, TSN.ca, and the TSN App.
