Lucas Herbert and Sam Burns each shot 8-under 62s Friday at Royal Birkdale to match the lowest round ever at a men’s major championship.
The number was first posted by Herbert, who had a chance to break the outright record with a 61 but missed a short putt on 18 for his only bogey of the day. Less than an hour later, Burns holed out from the bunker on 18 to match Herbert’s record-tying score.
The low round score of 62 is now shared by seven players, including South African golfer Branden Grace who first set the record during the third round of the 2017 Open at Royal Birkdale.
Herbert entered the day even after shooting 70 on Thursday, but currently leads the major thanks to his second-round surge. He was tied for 39th to begin the day.
He tied an Open Championship record with a 28 on the front nine at Royal Birkdale Friday. That tied the record set by Denis Durnian in 1983, also at Royal Birkdale.
The 30-year-old LIV player has never recorded a top-10 finish at a major. He has one career PGA Tour win, coming at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship in 2021.
Burns was sitting just outside the cut line at 3-over to begin his second round Friday and is now just three shots back of Herbert’s lead at 5-under.
