Canadian Nick Taylor started strong at the Open Championship Thursday, carding a 2-under 68 to put him in contention in the early stages of the tournament.

Taylor began his day at Royal Birkdale with a bang, carding three straight bridies on a trio of Par 4s. He closed our the front-nine 3-under and recovered from a pair of bogeys on holes 15 and 16 by rolling in a 20-foot birdie putt on 18, putting him at 2-under for the day.

That put the Abbotsford, B.C. native into a tie for 13th at the conclusion of play on Thursday, three shots back of solo leader Jackson Suber at 5-under.

Taylor is one of two Canadians in the field this week in Southport, England. He’s joined by Listowel, Ont.’s Corey Conners, who was 1-over in his opening round.

Conners made bogey on the fourth hole and parred the other 17 to grab a share of 59th heading into Friday.

Both players are looking for their first major championship title at the final men’s major of the season. Taylor has yet to make a cut in three Open Championships, while Conners has made the cut in five straight and is coming off a T10 finish last year at Royal Portrush.
