With its future murky, the 2026 LIV Golf season appears to ending sooner than planned.
Flushing It’s Tom Hobbs reports the breakaway golf league is set to cancel its season-ending Team Championship set for the final weekend of August in Michigan. An official announcement is expected on Wednesday.
The move comes after LIV golfer Martin Kaymer indicated last week that there was a “five per-cent chance” that the event would take place after a LIV captains’ meeting in England.
“I know that [pentultimate event] Indianapolis most likely is happening,” Kaymer told Today’s Golfer. “There was a conversation yesterday. Michigan, highly unlikely. So basically, what we already knew. That’s why I think it became a captains’ meeting and not a players’ meeting, because they couldn’t give us much more than we had before.”
The Detroit News’ Tony Paul reported on Tuesday that there had been no infrastructure buildout at The Cardinal at Saint John’s Resort, the course that was set to host the tournament. Paul notes that such an undertaking ahead of a tournament normally takes months.
The CEO of the organization that oversees the course, Kevin Doyle, told the outlet that nothing has changed on their end.
“Nothing new right now,” Doyle told The News. “LIV’s planning is ongoing and the Saint John’s team continues to work closely with them on it.”
Removing Michigan from the schedule leaves the tour with two events remaining on the season. LIV is set to play at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster on Aug. 6 before wrapping up the season with a tournament beginning on Aug. 20 at The Club at Chatham Hills in Westfield, IN.
The tour’s backer, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, has indicated that it will pull its funding after this season, leaving LIV’s future very much up in the air. Hobbs reported last week that a number of players look set to exit the tour at season’s end regardless of its future prospects. LIV has already seen the high-profile defections of Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed earlier this year.
