The AIG Women’s Open is the final major of the golf season and there are two Canadians in the field this week in Lancashire, England.
Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont. got off to a strong start in her first round Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club. Henderson kept on par for the front nine. She got her first birdie on the 12th hole.
Henderson had a more eventful back nine with three bogeys and two birdies. She finished at 1-over and tied for 38th at the conclusion of her round.
Henderson is 11th in the world according to the Rolex Rankings and is a two-time Major championship, having won the 2016 Women’s PGA Championship and the Evian Championship in 2022. She has 14 career wins and has made the cut in 11 of her 13 LPGA Tour starts this year.
Seventeen-year-old Anna Huang of Vancouver finished the front nine one-over with two bogeys and one birdie. She started the back nine with a bogey but stayed at 1-over with a birdie on the 12th hole.
Huang finished her round with a birdie on 18, but finished the day 4-over after a bogey on 15 and triple bogey on 17.
Huang has made the cut in two Majors this year (PGA, Evian) and aims to play the weekend for the first time this week at the AIG Women’s Open. She is No. 53 in the Rolex Rankings.
