Canadian golfers fighting for position as PGA Tour season nears end

Published:

The PGA Tour season is close to completion, with only five weeks remaining.

This week there are two events: The Scottish Open and the ISCO Championship, an opposite field event. The following week there are also two with the Open Championship as well as the Corales Puntacana Championship.

After that, it’s the final three weeks, with the 3M Open, the Rocket Classic and the Wyndham Championship.

All this means the pressure is now directly on golfers trying to get into the playoffs or retain their status for 2027.

That includes all nine Canadians who hold some level of status on tour.

It’s been an unusual year so far for the crew from north of the border. Only one player, rookie Sudarshan Yellamaraju, has more than a single top-10 finish. Together, the nine Canadians have managed a total of seven top 10s. Some are in good positions to reach the FedEx Cup playoffs, while others are in danger of losing their privileges for next season in an exceptionally competitive environment.

Here is a primer on how it all works:

The FedEx Cup starts in January and runs through August. The goal for a player is to finish the season inside the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings. Those 70 players move on to the playoffs, carrying their point totals from the regular season with them. They are assured of status for 2027.

There are three playoff events, none of which has a cut. They start with the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tenn., at TPC Southwind. The top 50 after that tournament go on to the next leg, the BMW Championship, which will be contested at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Mo. The final stop, the Tour Championship, features the top 30 players. Those golfers vie for the FedEx Cup and a first prize of $10 million.

Although the playoffs end in August, the golf season continues. In September, the FedEx Fall begins and has eight stops that eventually determine a golfer’s final position in the standings, and, therefore, their status for the following season.

The top 100 players in the standings after the FedEx Fall have exempt status for 2027. Players from 101 to 125 have conditional status while golfers from 126 and higher will get limited access to tournaments depending on their past performance. They can also choose to go back to the PGA Tour Qualifying School to regain better status or drop down to the Korn Ferry Tour.

Right now, there are just three Canadians inside the top 70: Yellamaraju, Nick Taylor and Corey Conners. Six others have work to do over the next five tournaments. A.J. Ewart and Taylor Pendrith sit inside the top 100, while Mackenzie Hughes, Ben Silverman, Adam Svensson and Adam Hadwin are on the outside hoping to move up.
