Who will make the playoffs? Who will qualify for next year’s signature events? Who will retain their playing privileges for 2027?
All those questions will be answered this week at the Wyndham Championship as the PGA Tour wraps up its regular season. For Canadians on the PGA Tour, this week could have a major impact on how they conclude their 2026 campaign and what it means for their 2027 season.
The top 70 after this week make it to the FedEx Cup playoffs, starting next week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis. It also means they have earned full-field status for 2027. The top 50 after that tournament advance to the BMW Championship in St. Louis. Those players also earn places in all of next season’s signature events. The top 30 following that week play in the Tour Championship in Atlanta, where the purse is $40 million with the winner taking home $10 million of that.
Here’s where the Canadians sit:
Sudarshan Yellamaraju (54), Corey Conners (56) and Nick Taylor (61) have locked up spots in the first playoff event next week, the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Only Taylor is playing this week with the other two gearing up for next week’s playoff start.
After a great start to his rookie season, Yellamaraju has missed the cut in four of his past five starts dating back to the U.S. Open. Statistically, his driver stats have slipped during that period, which is unusual as that club worked well prior to that.
Conners has had just one top-10 finish so far but he has managed three top-25 finishes in his past six starts including at both the U.S. Open and the Open Championship. During that period, his putter has started to shine and along with his accuracy off the tee and into the greens, has allowed him to finish off the regular season on a good note.
Taylor’s putter has worked well for him so far this season and he is currently in 44th spot in the Strokes Gained: Putting category. That’s his best rank in his past seven years and that club may decide whether he plays on into the second stage of the playoffs.
The focus for all three is now on getting inside the top 50 after that initial playoff tournament. There is also the chance to impress Presidents Cup International Team captain Geoff Ogilvy, who will select his team by the end of August.
For the other Canadians, the road is not quite as easy. Here’s what the Canadian golfers need to do:
Taylor Pendrith — The Richmond Hill, Ont., product is in 85th spot and will need to finish tied for fourth or better to move on to the playoffs. He has the assurance of retaining his playing privileges for next season for those who finish inside the top 100, although that won’t come with spots in signature events unless he qualifies during next season’s play.
A.J. Ewart – He sits right on top of the bubble in 100th position. A solo finish for third or better would move the Vancouver product into the top 70 and the playoffs. Most importantly, however, is that Ewart needs to stay inside the top 100 to play full time on the PGA Tour next year.
Mackenzie Hughes – The veteran has been in the FedEx Cup playoffs the past six years but starts this week in 120th spot. He will need a solo second or better to extend his streak but would probably settle for a spot inside the top 100 to keep his 2027 season in place.
Ben Silverman – A tie for third is the best finish in 12 starts on the season for Silverman who begins the week ranked 136th. He will require a great week just to put himself in the top 100 and only a win would move him to the top 70 and a place in the field for next week.
Adam Svensson – A tie for 26th is the best finish of the season for Svensson who would need a win to move on to next week. He’s in 176th spot and would also need a victory just to make it inside the top 100.
