Three of the six Canadians in the field this week at the Wyndham Championship made the cut in the PGA Tour’s regular-season finale.
Mackenzie Hughes, Nick Taylor and Taylor Pendrith will each play the weekend in Greensboro, N.C., while A.J. Ewart, Ben Silverman and Adam Svensson are all headed home for the rest of the Tour season.
This week was the last chance for players to get inside the top 70 on the season-long points list and book their spot in the playoff opener at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
Pendrith, Ewart, Hughes, Silverman, and Svensson were all on the outside looking in on the playoff picture coming into the week. Taylor and fellow Canadians Sudarshan Yellamaraju and Corey Conners have already booked spots in next week’s playoff opener in Memphis.
Pendrith, 85th on the points list, fired a 4-under 66 in the opening round and followed that up with a 1-under 69 Friday in Round 2. That put him six shots back of leader Ben James and Jordan Smith at the conclusion of his second round. Beau Hossler later took the lead at 12-under.
The Richmond Hill, Ont. native has already retained his playing privileges for next year after locking up his spot in the top 100.
Ewart, from Coquitlam, B.C., came into the week right on the bubble at No. 100, and finished one shot off the cut line at 3-under.
Hughes, who is tops among Canadians this week at the Wyndham Championship at 5-under, came into the week 120th on the FedEx Cup standings. He’ll need to keep his strong play up throughout the weekend and finish solo second to advance to the Tour playoffs.
Hailing from Dundas, Ont., Hughes shot a 67 on Friday to give himself a chance over the final two rounds.
Both Silverman (136) of Thornhill, Ont., and Svensson (188) of Surrey, B.C., required a win this week to earn a spot in the first playoff event.
Abbotsford, B.C.’s Taylor closed his day with a 68 to get to 3-under for the tournament, and is in position to make the cut on the number as he gears up for the St. Jude next week.
