Canada will leave the IIHF Men’s World Ice Hockey Championship empty-handed for the third consecutive year.
The Canadians were defeated by Norway 3-2 in overtime in the bronze-medal game on Sunday, with Noah Steen sending his country to their first-ever medal at the men’s worlds with his winner at the 3:32 mark of the extra frame.
Norway led the game 2-0 in the late stages of the third period behind goals from Emilio Pettersen and Stian Solberg, before Robert Thomas scored twice for Canada in the final 1:16 of regulation to send the game to overtime.
After Canada was unable to capitalize on some early chances in the three-on-three OT, Steen brought the puck in off the rush and beat Canadian net-minder Jet Greaves to deny the late comeback attempt.
Greaves made 21 saves on 24 shots, while Norwegian goalie Henrik Haukeland turned away 43 of the 45 shots he faced.
Finland and tournament hosts Switzerland will play for gold later in the afternoon on Sunday.
More to come.
