The Los Angeles Angels designated two players for assignment on Sunday, including Canadian relief pitcher Jordan Romano, the team announced.
The full set of roster moves included placing catcher Logan O’Hoppe on the 10-day Injured List with a wrist fracture, designating righty pitchers Shaun Anderson and Romano, and calling up pitchers Jose Fermin and Joey Lucchesi along with catcher Sebastian Rivero to the major-league club.
Romano, a native of Markham, Ont., came out on fire to begin the season, his first with the Angels, notching four saves over his first six scoreless appearances of the year. In his past five appearances, Romano has allowed nine earned runs in 3.0 innings pitched, taking two blown saves and two losses and ballooning his earned-run average on the year to 10.13.
Romano, who turned 33 on Tuesday, is a two-time All-Star (2022, 2023) in six strong seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays. After struggling in 2024, the team decided to move on from the towering righty.
Last year with the Philadelphia Phillies, Romano pitched to an ugly 8.23 ERA over 49 appearances, and has produced even worse results this year in 11 appearances with the Angels.
Over Romano’s eight-year career with the Blue Jays, Phillies and Angels, the former 10th-round pick has an ERA of 3.92 with 344 strikeouts over 280.1 innings pitched.
