Bell steps down as Blue Jays assistant GM, VP

David Bell’s time with the Toronto Blue Jays is over.

Bell confirmed to The Athletic that he has stepped down as the team’s assistant general manager and vice-president of baseball operations.

Bell, 54, spent two years in the role.

“I decided to step away and reassess where I can make the greatest impact, on and off the field,” Bell said in a statement. “The Toronto Blue Jays are a first-class organization. I have a deep appreciation for the people I’ve worked with over the past two years.”

A native of Cincinnati, Bell appeared in 1,403 games as a player for Cleveland, St. Louis Cardinals, Seattle Mariners, San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers across 12 seasons from 1995 to 2006.

He would go on to a coaching career, beginning at the Double-A level with the Reds in 2008. After a management stint in Triple-A, he joined the big league coaching staff of the Chicago Cubs in 2012. Joining the Cards the following year, he spent four seasons with the organization before leaving for the Giants’ front office.

Bell would then be named manager of the Reds for the 2019 season. He would spend five-plus seasons with the team before being fired during the final week of the 2024 season. He concluded his tenure with an overall record of 409-456 (.479). Bell’s Reds made the playoffs once in the COVID-shortened 2020 season.
