The typical recovery period for Tommy John is 12 to 18 months.
The Bayamon, Puerto Rico had initially been diagnosed with a stress fracture in his pitching elbow with the ailment found during a scan ahead of the World Baseball Classic.
Berrios is in the fifth year of a seven-year, $131 million deal.
The surgery comes amid a prolonged period of frustration for the two-time All-Star. Last September, Berrios was moved to the bullpen, something the righty took umbrage with after 30 starts and a 4.06 earned run average. Days later, his season was ended with elbow inflammation. His choice to continue his rehab at home rather than remain with his teammates for their World Series run became a source of contention between player and club.
Across 10 seasons with the Blue Jays and Twins, Berrios is 108-82 with a 4.08 ERA and 1.239 WHIP in 1,571.2 innings pitched over 275 appearances.
