Blue Jays’ Bieber pitches two scoreless inning as rehab assignment begins in FCL

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Shane Bieber began his rehab assignment in the Florida Complex League on Monday, embarking on his return to the MLB with a promising performance.

Bieber, who hasn’t pitched this season due to elbow issues, allowed no runs on three hits and three strikeouts over two innings of work for the Florida Complex League Blue Jays.

The 30-year-old Bieber was acquired from the Cleveland Guardians ahead of the trade deadline last summer after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April of 2024.

As a member of the Jays, Bieber posted a 4-2 record alongside a 3.57 ERA and 1.02 WHIP over seven starts during the regular season.

The righty pitched well in the playoffs as well, producing a 3.86 ERA over five appearances, including four starts. However, Bieber was stuck with the loss in Game 7 of the World Series after allowing a solo home run to Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Will Smith in the 11th inning.

Bieber elected to pick up his $16 million option for the 2026 campaign instead of testing free agency, a decision that was likely due to the right elbow inflammation he has been dealing with this season.

Bieber was one of the best pitchers in baseball during his time with the Guardians, winning the Cy Young Award in 2020 and being named an All-Star in 2019 and 2021.
