Blue Jays DFA RHP Waldron, activate LHP Cellucci

Published:

The Toronto Blue Jays have designated right-handed pitcher Matt Waldron for assignment, it was announced Wednesday.

The Blue Jays claimed Waldron off waivers from the San Diego Padres after he was DFA’d by the Padres on July 29.

The knuckleballer made four appearances with the Blue Jays, during which he posted a 10.38 ERA.

He turned in scoreless outings in his first two appearances with the Blue Jays, but struggled in the following two.

He gave up three runs in the ninth inning against the Boston Red Sox on Aug. 12. He was replaced by Louis Varland with runners on second and third with one out. Varland got the save and the Blue Jays won 6-4.

Waldron’s final appearance with the Blue Jays was in Tuesday’s 10-5 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. He gave up two runs on four hits in two innings.

In a corresponding move, the Blue Jays activated left-handed pitcher Brendan Cellucci.

Cellucci has spent most of the season with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. He posted a 3.68 ERA over 44 innings in 39 appearances.

The Blue Jays are fourth in the AL East with a 62-65 record. They sit half a game back of the final AL wild card spot.

The Blue Jays continue their series against the Rays tonight in Tampa.
