Yariel Rodriguez’s time with the Toronto Blue Jays is at an end.
The team designated the right-hander for assignment on Monday.
In a corresponding move, righty Tommy Nance has been activated from the injured list.
Rodriguez, 29, has struggled mightily this season, his third with the team. In 10 appearances, Rodriguez posted a 7.71 earned run average with a 2.036 WHIP, surrendering 12 hits and 11 runs, with eight of them earned over 9.1 innings pitched. He struck out six batters and walked seven.
A native of Camaguey, Cuba, Rodriguez initially signed a four-year, $26 million deal with an option ahead of the 2024 season. He was moved to the bullpen in 2025 after operating almost exclusively as a starter in his first season with the team. Rodriguez cleared waivers in December and was removed from the 40-man roster. He was re-added in May when he was recalled from the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.
Rodriguez finishes his Blue Jays tenure with a record of 4-11 with a 4.05 ERA and 1.284 WHIP over 169.0 IP in 97 appearances (including 22 starts). He struck out 157 batters and walked 81.
The Blue Jays (32-34) sit third in the American League East, seven games back of the division-leading Tampa Bay Rays. The team sits a half-game back of the Texas Rangers for the final AL wild-card spot.
The Blue Jays open up a three-game set with the Philadelphia Phillies (35-30) at Rogers Centre on Monday night.
